Some Guidelines For DUI Sobriety Tests

There are numerous reasons behind a police officer pulling over a driver. One of the main reasons is when the officer suspects that the driver is driving under influence (DUI) of alcohol. If this is the case, then the police officer has a number of options at his disposal. One of which is asking the driver to sit for a few tests in order to determine whether he is suitable to drive safely. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has approved a standard set of sobriety tests which can be carried out on the roads all over US including in major cities like Valencia (CA) and Moorpark (CA). These can only be given by police officers who are specially trained to interpret and administer the tests.

Although these tests can be mainly administered by police officers, others like DUI lawyers can also choose to be certified as a Field Sobriety Test Administrator. The main reason being DUI lawyers can actually see if the test is fair in its existence and another is to check whether it is being administered accurately. When DUI lawyers understand how these tests work and how to interpret the results, defending their clients gets easier for them.

Two of the DUI sobriety tests which are followed across a number of US cities like West Hollywood (CA) and Valencia (CA) are as follows:

1.One leg stand: According to this test the person is asked to raise one foot approximately 6 inches off the ground while counting loudly. The person performing the test is not allowed to sway, hop, put the raised foot down or use the arms to balance himself. When any two of these happen then it is likely that the person has consumed alcohol over the legal limit.

2.Walk and turn: As per this test the person is asked to walk a certain distance from heel to toe in a straight line. He is prevented from using his hands to balance himself. The person is also not allowed to take improper turns or step off the line. Missing any two of the factors will determine that the person is over the legal level of alcohol consumption.
